Hershey’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are a Halloween staple — even if some fans don’t Reese-pect the correct pronunciation.
When Parade.com asked for clarification this week, a Hershey’s spokesperson pointed the outlet to a new Halloween commercial narrated by Will Arnett.
Parade noted that “Reese’s” sounds like the possessive form of Reese Witherspoon’s first name, and it also rhymes with “pieces.”
But some peanut buffs pronounce it “Ree-sees.”
Last year, country music singer Ashley Cooke, 26, posted a TikTok with more than 600,000 views asking her two friends how to pronounce the candy’s name.
“Re-sees,” she says. “Alana, how do you say ‘Re-sees?’”
Alana replies, “I say it like you.” Their pal Tom agreed.
People in the comments section couldn’t Reese-ist giving Cooke a piece of their mind.
“We say Reese like Reese Witherspoon. Like Reese’s dress is blue,” one explained.
“Reese’s Pieces (ReesIS),” emphasized another.
“Nooooo it ree-sis. It rhymes, Reese’s pieces,” a third corrected her.
“I’m from Hershey and confirm that it’s pronounced like the possession of Reese … just like it’s spelled. Named after H.B Reese,” another shared.
The beloved peanut butter cups were cooked up in 1928 by H.B. Reese, an employee of the Hershey Company, per the Hersheyland website.
Ninety-five years after their creation, Reese’s cups are America’s most popular Halloween candy, followed by M&M’s and Hot Tamales, according to a CandyStore.com analysis of sales data from 2007 to 2022.
No matter how you say it, eating lots of candy feeds your body more sugar and calories than is healthy.
Americans consume on average about 3.4 pounds of candy on Halloween, per the Economic Times, which noted that children eat around 7,000 calories on the holiday.
Just one Reese’s cup is 110 calories — and burning off the candy can take some effort.
For a 155-pound person, weightlifting for 30 minutes will burn 108 calories, as will 30 minutes of other activities such as bowling and volleyball, according to Harvard Health.
Spending 30 minutes grocery shopping with a cart will on average burn 106 calories.
